Minimalist Style
Minimalist style is an aesthetic defined by restraint: clean lines, neutral or monochromatic colour palettes, quality fabrics, and the deliberate absence of decoration or excess.
Origin & context
Minimalism as a fashion aesthetic traces to the 1990s work of designers including Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, and early Calvin Klein — a reaction against the excess of 1980s fashion. It has remained a persistent aesthetic position, with influence extending to Japanese wabi-sabi and Scandinavian design traditions.
In fashion discovery
Minimalist style is easy to identify in a taste profile because it produces consistent clustering: items with simple silhouettes, muted tones, and clean surfaces pull in the same direction. It is also one of the most searched aesthetic terms, which makes it a useful entry point for discovering adjacent styles.
Examples
In clothing: a white crew-neck tee, straight-leg black trousers, a camel overcoat. In jewelry: a plain gold band, a thin chain necklace, small geometric earrings. Brands: COS, Toteme, The Row at the higher end.
